Your Mind Is Not God
A conversation between Seth Crosby, guest; and Devaughn Williamson, host.
Seth’s story is one of faith, struggle, and ultimately finding a real, personal relationship with God. He grew up in a ministry-driven family, traveling to different countries as a missionary kid. He saw miracles, healings, and incredible acts of God from a young age—things that most people only read about. He even witnessed a young boy in Mexico get miraculously healed, running for the first time in his life after years of using metal braces. These experiences made it impossible for Seth to deny God’s existence, but knowing of God and truly knowing Him are two very different things.
Despite growing up around faith, Seth struggled with making it personal. He saw the power of God but didn’t fully understand what it meant to have a relationship with Him. He questioned whether people were really hearing from God or just saying things that sounded good. He even believed, at one point, that his own thoughts were the voice of God, which led to a lot of confusion.
It wasn’t until college that everything shifted. He met a mentor—someone who truly lived out their faith with consistency. This was a turning point for Seth, as he realized that hearing God’s voice wasn’t about his own mind or intellect, but about being led by the Spirit. He learned that true faith isn’t just about knowing what God does—it’s about knowing God personally.
Fast forward to college graduation—Seth thought doors would open automatically for him because of his degree. But reality hit hard. No job offers came, and he found himself lost. So, in desperation, he went out into the forest to seek God’s guidance. He prayed a simple but faith-filled prayer asking that his mentor call him. And sure enough, while helping someone move, his phone rang. It was him!
That call? It wasn’t a pat on the back—it was correction. Seth had been making decisions out of pride and assumption rather than wisdom. Seth’s mentor told him to return to Tulsa, and Seth had to make a choice: Did he trust that this man truly heard from God? He did.
Back in Tulsa, things didn’t change overnight. It took months, and it took hard truths. At Bible studies, his mentor kept calling out specific struggles—fear, pride, lust—and each time, Seth knew it was for him. He had a choice: get offended and never go back or receive correction and grow. He chose to humble himself, and that humility opened the door for true transformation.
What Seth learned through all this was that faith is built on trust. If you can’t trust the people God puts in your life, how can you trust God Himself? Through correction, accountability, and surrender, Seth finally stepped into a real, growing relationship with God—one where he could truly hear His voice.
Unable to secure a job, Seth’s mentor saw what he couldn’t see - his pride, lack of preparation, and the way he presented himself. He didn’t just give Seth advice; he took action. He walked Seth through a mock interview, pointed out the areas he needed to improve, and even took him shopping for a proper interview suit. This wasn’t just about clothes—it was about being equipped for the opportunities God had in store. And sure enough, two interviews later, Seth landed the job that set his career in motion.
But the real transformation wasn’t just about getting a job. It was about character. Seth had to let go of pride, fear, and lust, replacing them with humility, confidence, and purity. He learned to listen to God’s voice, to be led by Him in every aspect of life, and to trust that His plan was better than his own.
Looking back, Seth’s biggest lesson is this: your mind is not God—your thoughts aren’t always aligned with His. He encourages others to seek wise, godly mentors and to truly allow God to lead them. Because when you let God take control, He works everything out in ways you never could on your own.
If Seth’s story moved you, consider sharing it with someone who needs encouragement. And I encourage you to partner with Faith Ignite to help bring more stories of hope to the world. Together, we can spread messages of God's faithfulness to those who need it most.
